Cause of Movement: During the antebellum period of the United States history, temperance societies were growing in all areas of the country. Most of the temperance societies started and were much larger in the Northeast and the Midwest. People who supported this movement came from all walks of life and for different reasons. The main reasons why people joined the temperance movement, was because they believed that alcohol was the reason why America was having such social problems at the time. These problems being the increased rate of crime and poverty, which was stated in the summary. Before 1836, most supporters of the Temperance Movement wanted to prohibit the selling of liquor, not beer or wine. But In 1836 the national Temperance Movement adopted a policy called teetotalism; a policy in favor of prohibiting the sale of not only liquor, but also beer and wine. Also, many women at this time had to deal with husbands that drank too much. There were many reasons why people joined the Temperance Movement and everyone who joined the movement strongly disagreed with the selling and consumption of alcohol in America.
